Community Fire Units are volunteer teams of local residents who are trained to defend homes during a bush fire until the Fire Brigade arrives. The goal of the Community Fire Units is to protect people and property from bushfires, and reduce the impact of bushfires on the community through education, prevention and preparation.
Volunteers are trained by local fire stations. Training includes learning about bushfire behaviour, how to plan and prepare for bushfires, handling of fire fighting equipment, and processes which can help to reduce the incidence of bushfires.
If you are interested in joining a Community Fire Unit, contact your local fire station or visit the NSW Fire Brigades website. Willoughby’s local fire station is:
Willoughby Fire Station 53 Laurel Street Willoughby NSW Ph: 9958 4016
