Latest information on Castle Cove fires

Posted: Monday, 7 November 2016

On Thursday, Willoughby Council, in conjunction with NSW Fire and Rescue, conducted a hazard reduction burn at Castle Cove. The burn, attended by Council staff and NSW Fire and Rescue crew was part of Council’s regular hazard reduction process.  Upon completion of the hazard reduction, Council extinguished the burn in consultation with NSW Fire and Rescue.

Later on Thursday night, NSW Fire and Rescue responded to an emergency call from a resident to treat a separate fire in proximity to the hazard reduction burn.  Willoughby Council staff provided fire crew with access to the bushland where the separate fire was reported.  NSW Fire and Rescue were able to contain and extinguish the fire.

Both areas were monitored by Council staff and Fire and Rescue crew throughout Friday. However, due to strong winds, a fire reignited in the area on Saturday morning.  It is believed this fire came from the separate fire reported on Thursday night.

While the area is now stable, Council staff and Fire and Rescue crew are staying vigilant throughout the day today and will actively monitor the site.  The relationship between the two fires is subject to a Fire and Rescue investigation and more information will be provided once a report is received by Council.
