Important recreational land retained for community use - Willoughby Council purchases Artarmon Bowling Club site

29 February 2016

The Artarmon Bowling Club site has been secured exclusively for future community recreational use, with the sale of the land to Willoughby City Council.

Willoughby Council announced today it had purchased the Burra Road site from the Club on the condition that Council continues using the site for recreation and leisure activities by the wider community, in perpetuity.

Willoughby Mayor, Gail Giles-Gidney said that while it was sad the club would no longer operate due to a declining membership of active bowlers, the fact that the land would remain in public ownership is a win for the local community.

“Artarmon Bowling Club has been an important part of the Willoughby community since 1946 and will be greatly missed,” Mayor Gail said.

“On-behalf of the Community, I would like to thank the Club for approaching Council and allowing us to purchase the land and retain it for leisure and recreation activities. This is a wonderful legacy that the Club leaves behind,” Mayor Gail added.

The Board of Directors of the Artarmon Bowling Club commented, “Whilst is it regrettable that we could not attract more bowling membership support, we are proud to have provided a venue that has given a great deal of enjoyment to both members and visitors alike. Our members unanimously supported the decision to offer the Club site to the Council and thereby honour the legacy of the founders of the Club by ensuring the site will be retained for community recreational use in perpetuity.”

The 7,639sqm site currently includes two operational bowling greens and a club-house. While the site is located within the Artarmon Conservation Area, it is not individually listed as a local heritage item.

Community groups currently using the facilities will continue to have access until the end of this financial year and Council may honour further use while the site is assessed and, basic maintenance upgrades made, and future plans for use are decided.

Council will also conduct community consultation in the near future so the community can have their say and share their thoughts about how the site should be used.
