Playground upgrades given go ahead

15 March 2016

Two hundred thousand dollars worth of themed landscape improvements have been given the go ahead at Castle Cove Park Playground, Castle Cove and John Roche Playground in Northbridge, especially aimed at providing safe and fun play spaces for Willoughby’s youngest residents and their families.

The playground upgrades are part of Council’s commitment to maintaining assets including parks, sportsgrounds and outdoor living spaces for current and future community use, with the two projects funded by Council’s Infrastructure Levy.

Castle Cove Park Playground will receive a ‘frog’ themed makeover, thanks to its proximity next to remnant bushland where frogs can often be heard after rainfall.

New play equipment will cater to a range of age groups, including swings and a slide that are suitable for pre-school aged children. There will also be a frog play structure, spinning net and four-person frog see-saw.  New seating will be installed, upgrades made to the circuit trike track and improvements made to site visibility by removing some trees and earthworks.

A ‘King and Castle’ them will transform John Roche Playground into a landscape of moats and bridges, with a new climbing fort and slide net.

Other new playground equipment will include a triple swing set with a baby seat, spinning net, horse rocker and sand table in sand pit. A new circuit trike track and new accessible bubbler will also be added. Upgrades and replacements will be made to existing fencing and seating.

“One of the great things about Willoughby is our open space - our beautiful parks and playgrounds, so it’s great to see them being maintained and upgraded for use by the next generation. The plans for the playgrounds look fun and engaging, and I’m sure local children and their families are going to really love the themed play areas and new equipment,” said Willoughby Mayor, Gail Giles-Gidney.

Work on both projects is anticipated to commence in May 2016 and be complete by mid 2016 (weather permitting).
