Named after John J. Roche J.P., local resident and activist on the Northbridge Progress Association from 1945-75. In 1983 the playground was dedicated to his memory due to his interest in youth and youth organisations. The playground is part of Northbridge Park, a Crown Land reserve managed by Willoughby Council.

There are district views from the playground over the adjacent Northbridge Golf Course.
