Cancellation of Northern Beaches Link Tunnel
Last modified on 12 December 2023
Willoughby Council welcomes the cancellation of the Northern Beaches Link Tunnel and remains steadfastly committed to promoting public transport and active transport options for residents. The cancellation of the Beaches Link project will have implications for Willoughby and the surrounding LGA’s, and we are keen to ensure the impact on the environment is minimised, and that thoughtful active transport is promoted to better connect our cycles ways and walking paths. We know the NSW Government has added improved cycleway access to this project, and we ask if more can be done. Are there more connections to improve the cycleway network? Like gaps in the network linking from Naremburn. We will continue to lobby the Government for these improvements.
Council has recently written to the NSW Government seeking better public transport outcomes for the Chatswood bus interchange, and for better bus services to connect to the new metro line and heavy rail line – this ‘last mile’ of the trip needs to be reliable and regular to support population growth. Council has also resolved to write to the NSW Government seeking priority bus lanes for buses, including a tunnel to the northern beaches for buses only.
