Youth Week shines light on disability with Chatswood glow-disco

Young people from across North Sydney gathered in April to celebrate Youth Week at a glow-in-the-dark themed party at Chatswood’s Dougherty Community Centre.

Hosted by the Youth Services team at Willoughby City Council and made possible by volunteers from Willoughby Youth Action Group, the inclusive dance event was held to bring communities together and promote inclusive environments for young people living with disability.

The Dougherty Community Centre was transformed into a neon wonderland, with glow-in-the-dark furniture, day-glo face-painting, and a soundtrack provided by a live band.

"It was incredible to see so many young people come together and celebrate in such a positive and energetic environment," one parent said. "Events like these really are rare and make our community feel alive." One young attendee said: "It was the best night of my life!"

Willoughby City Council Mayor Tanya Taylor said:

“Willoughby’s ambition is to be an inclusive and diverse city where everyone is encouraged to reach their full potential, and events like this are really important for showing residents that we mean it. It was fantastic to see our disabled community come together and enjoy themselves in such a joyous and colourful setting, while drawing attention to a vital cause.”
