Incinerator Art Space closed until further notice

After issues faced following this month’s heavy rains, Willoughby City Council has today taken the difficult decision to postpone exhibitions in its Incinerator Art Space until further notice.

A spokesperson for Willoughby City Council said:

“Earlier this month the Willoughby Local Government area experienced its heaviest rainfall in four years, with over 200mm recorded across a 24 hour period. Unfortunately, these rains affected the heritage sandstone Walter Burley-Griffin-designed Incinerator building, as well as the Incinerator Art Space located inside. Council is currently investigating to determine the extent of any repair works required, and as a result has taken the difficult decision to postpone all exhibitions scheduled in the Incinerator Art Space until further notice.

“We are working with all affected artists to discuss alternative dates or locations and will communicate these to the public as soon as possible. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.”

Notes to editors

1. The Incinerator Café, located on the top floor of the building is not affected and will remain open as normal.
2. Friday 5 April saw a significant rain event across the Willoughby Local Government Area, with the BOM reporting that the area received 189mm over a 24 hour period, and our own rain gauge in Northbridge showing 212mm. This was the heaviest rain in four years, with Chatswood receiving the most rainfall in Sydney on that day.
