Council has many opportunities for people wishing to be involved in some form of community activity. Volunteers provide a wide range of valuable services in Willoughby's social, environmental and cultural well-being.

Duke of Edinburgh - opportunities for students
Council welcomes Duke of Edinburgh volunteers, and has a limited number of opportunities for students completing the Award including:

Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury Sydney
Lifeline is a not-for-profit organisation providing people experiencing a personal crisis with access to 24-hour crisis support and suicide prevention services. We're committed to empowering Australians to be suicide-safe through connection, compassion and hope.

- Community Aid volunteer – providing practical support and companionship to people aged 65+.
- Lifeline Crew volunteer – once-off events and initiatives.
- Lifeline book shop volunteer – Hornsby and Lindfield
- Lifeline book depot volunteer – Hornsby and West Lindfield
- Lifeline retail shop volunteer – Asquith, Waitara, Gladesville, Lane Cove, Naremburn, Pennant Hills and Northbridge (opening soon).

Justice Advocacy Service
The Justice Advocacy Service are seeking Court Support Volunteers.
What does a JAS volunteer do?
- Supports a person who has cognitive impairment when they go to court
- Helps the person understand their rights and court outcomes
- Facilitates communication with stakeholders like Solicitors and Court staff
- Provides emotional support to JAS clients on what can be a stressful day of court
The JAS is a program of the Intellectual Disability Rights Service (IDRS). IDRS provides free services for people with cognitive impairment across NSW providing help with legal problems. They work alongside people with cognitive impairment to promote and protect their rights. More information and direct applications can be found on the IDRS website.
Volunteers must be flexible and have availability 9am - 5pm during weekdays. Volunteers will receive comprehensive training enabling them to effectively support clients with Cognitive Impairment. Potential volunteers will possess a tolerant and empathetic manner, developed and effective communication and listening skills, along with an understanding of the importance of confidentiality and boundaries.
This is a long-term volunteering position requiring a minimum commitment of 6 months. IDRS is a Centrelink approved organisation. All volunteering takes place within COVID safe guidelines. Please contact 1300 665 908 for more information.
