Trails

An exhibition of printmaking by Seong Cho.

Trails is a collection of woodblock prints hand-printed on traditional Korean mulberry paper by artist Seong Cho. The exhibition features multi-layered, translucent designs depicting both the turmoil and serenity we experience on our journey through life.

Artist's Statement:

"This work is an abstract expression of a landscape from a birds-eye view. It is a topographical representation of the memories I have of my mother country, Korea, and its mountainous panorama. At the same time, the bold thick lines are symbolic of the winding and long journey of life we all must take, and serves as a reminder that we can observe the scenery while coming across the various obstacles we must encounter along the way. Using wood-print technique and calligraphy-inspired brushstroke design came as an inspiration from my Korean cultural heritage, something that is extremely important to me as an immigrant to Australia and being so far from my own country. I wanted to depict a meditative and peaceful atmosphere, inspired by Zen philosophy, which we often ignore in our busy lives, so that we forget to contemplate our journeys - both where we have been and where we are going. This artwork represents no physical time or space but is a transcendental image that portrays the intricate and complex ‘trails’ we leave behind us, and before those to come, as we form relationships and try to find our sense of place in the world."
