Apply for a work zone permit

Online

When would you need this?

An on-street work zone, sometimes known as a construction zone, is a designated section of road where vehicles involved in construction work can stop to load and unload materials.

What you need to know:

  • Works can only commence following payment of the fees and receipt of the approval letter from Council.
  • Permit approval is subject to the Council's engineer's satisfaction with the proposed works.
  • The minimum processing time for the application is 4 weeks, however, in some circumstances, the assessment and determination process may require longer time frames.
  • Applications will require approval from the voting members of Council’s Local Traffic Committee.
  • Standard work zones are signposted with operating hours of 7am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 12pm Saturday.
  • Please note that a work zone only allows for parking in accordance with the Australian road rules. You may also need to apply for specific permits available through the Council, when applicable.

Step 1.Fees and charges

  • An application fee will be charged on lodgement. Please note that a rental fee will be issued to you after Council’s assessment.
  • Any amendment requests will incur an additional fee.
  • Rental fees are based on the number of weeks and length of road occupied.
  • If the works affect metered pay parking, the standard parking rate will be applied to the application.
  • Check Council's adopted fees and charges.

Step 2.What you will need to provide

  • Construction traffic management plan (mandatory).
  • Locality sketch or site plan of your work zone (mandatory).
  • Approval from relevant bus company - for example, for work zones at bus stops or bus routes.
  • Approval from TfNSW Transport Management Centre - for example, for work zones within 100 metres from the traffic signals, or on state or regional roads.
  • Consent letter signed from neighbouring property, where the proposed work zone extends in front of a neighbouring property.
