When would you need this?

You need an occupation of public road permit if you plan to place a mobile plant, vehicle, or temporary structure on a public road or footpath. This permit applies to:

  • trucks
  • concrete line pumps
  • concrete boom pumps
  • mobile cranes
  • scissor lifts
  • cherry pickers
  • boom lifts
  • other hoisting devices
  • filming equipment and vehicles
  • event structures and staging.

What you need to know:

  • Works can only commence following payment of the fees and receipt of the approval letter from Council.
  • Permit approval is subject to the Council's engineer's satisfaction with the proposed works.
  • The minimum processing time for the application is 10 business days, however, in some circumstances, the assessment and determination process may require longer time frames.
  • Applications lodged within 24 hours (1 business day) before the commencement of the works may be refused.
  • If a temporary full road closure is required, the minimum processing time for the application is 4 weeks and will require approval from the voting members of Council’s Local Traffic Committee.

Step 1.Fees and charges

  • An application fee will be charged on lodgement. Please note that a rental fee will be issued to you after Council’s assessment.
  •  Additional fees will apply to applications lodged 72 hours (3 business days) before the commencement of the works.
  • Any change of date requests will incur an additional fee.
  • Rental fees based on the number of days, lanes and length of road occupied, in intervals of 6-metres.
  • If the works affect metered pay parking, the standard parking rate will be applied to the application.
  • Check Council's adopted fees and charges.

Step 2.What you will need to provide

  • Traffic guidance scheme or traffic management plan (mandatory).
  • Approval from NSW Police - for example, for full road closure.
  • Approval from relevant bus company - for example, for works at bus stops or bus routes.
  • Approval from TfNSW Transport Management Centre - for example, for works within 100 metres from the traffic signals, or on state or regional roads.
