E-waste

Old electronics, or e-waste, contain valuable materials like metals that we can reuse. Recycling them is important because throwing them in the bin (landfill) can be dangerous. The harmful chemicals in e-waste can leak into the ground and water, making them bad for our health and the environment.

Willoughby residents can use these services to dispose of e-waste free of charge:

• Northern Sydney Community Recycling Centre accepts computers, TVs, small electrical appliances, and mobile phones.
• Officeworks has an e-waste recycling program, find a drop off location.
• The Reconnect Project (accept old or damaged laptops, tablets or phones) who repair them for people in need. Please ensure personal data is erased from your device. 

E-waste is NOT allowed in your weekly rubbish collection or in your kerbside Clean Up services.

Batteries (general household): 

Lithium-ion batteries cannot be placed into home general waste or recycling bins. They can cause fires during waste collection, transportation, handling and processing.

• Small, undamaged household batteries (not swollen, punctured, or leaking, etc.) can be safely disposed of at a B-cycle battery recycling drop off point. It is recommended that battery terminals are taped over with clear adhesive tape before placing the battery carefully (without dropping it) into a battery recycling collection bin.
• Household batteries and car batteries can also be taken to the Northern Sydney Community Recycling Centre or a Household Chemical CleanOut event. 

Mobile phones:

If your mobile is still working, consider extending its life by either selling it or passing it on to friends and family.

• If your phone doesn’t have any resale value or has stopped working, it can be recycled for free at most mobile phone stores and selected OfficeWorks stores as part of the MobileMuster program.
• They can also be taken to the Northern Sydney Community Recycling Centre.
• You can also drop them off to The Reconnect Project (accepts old or damaged laptops, tablets or phones) who will repair them for people in need.

Note: Before you recycle, sell or give away your mobile phone, you should remove your personal information (tips to erase your data).
